The summer is nearly over and now comes the dreaded time to start shopping for school supplies. Not only is it expensive, but it’s also frustrating hanging around crowded isles of Wal-Mart and nobody really knows what they are looking for. Most of the items on my children’s school list isn’t even in the stores! So, last year I told myself that I would do things differently. I decided to start shopping for school supplies online.
- It’s so much easier.
- There is NO pressure.
- It’s cheaper because most online stores(((cough)))Amazon(((cough)))still offer tax-free incentives.
- You don’t have to look like a crazy lady.
Outcome of Wal-Mart Shopping
So, here’s what my child’s school supply list entails:
2-pack of Highlighters: $1.97 with free shipping
2-pack Expo Markers: $6.99 with free shipping (pack of 12)
2-red pens: $1.18 with free shipping
2-2 inch binders: $8.28 with free shipping
2-pack of dividers with 5 tabs: $2.68 with free shipping
3-composition notebook: $1.75 with, you guessed it…free shipping
1-pack of 8 markers: $3.58- yep. It’s free.
1-3 subject notebook (wide ruled): $2.80 with free shipping
I think you get the picture but I will keep going.
2- 1 subject notebook: $1.08 with f/s
1- pack pencil top erasers: $4.29 for pack of 144 with f/s
1- pack index cards (lined): $1.47 with f/s
2- pack 24 crayons: $4.47 Crayola Twistables with free shipping (I splurged a little for this since she loves this type of crayon and these don’t break) win-win situation
4- box kleenex tissues: $5.68 pack of 4 with lotion and f/s

So, going through Amazon, not only did I save a lot of money from the general price of the merchandise and taxes, but I saved time and loss of mental stability. I compared the prices with Wal-mart. Amazon beat them all, except the price of the 24 pack of Crayola crayons. Those are remarkably cheaper. However, I traded price for quality. I know these will last longer, stay sharper, and not break. It’s also easy to label to keep the greedy little heathen kids from stealing my child’s crayons. 😉 wink

Every year, the week before or the week school starts the price for a 24 pack of crayons go way down. About 25 cents a pack. That’s when I stock up. I’ll come back two or three times and keep them stashed in a closet. When the kids lose them, or they all break, I’ll bring out a new pack throughout the year. It’s so much better than paying full price during the school year. Keep the extra supplies at home too. Last year I sent my daughter with plenty of supplies to last the school year…lots of journals. She got switched to another class a week after school started, and only used one journal the whole year. I guess the rest stayed, along with many other supplies I sent her with only to never see again.
